LONELY-EU officially started in February 2025 with a kick-off event at Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam. Researchers, policy experts, and external partners from across Europe and beyond came together to launch the project.
The event also brought the Dutch research community and organisations working on loneliness into one room. It gave them a shared space to learn from each other and to begin working together.
In the months after the launch, the consortium focused on building internal connections, planning the project in detail, and making contact with loneliness researchers around the world.
LONELY-EU is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Maike Luhmann of Ruhr University Bochum. The consortium includes Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Fioti, the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, the University of Milan, the Annecy Behavioral Science Lab, and SWPS University. Together they work to understand loneliness across Europe and to turn the evidence into policy.
Do you work on loneliness, or are you part of a project or initiative tackling isolation in Europe? We would like to hear from you. Please send your news, publications, or events to info@lonelinessineurope.eu.
