Approach
LONELY-EU uses a multi-method, cross-national approach to understand and address social isolation and loneliness (SIL) across Europe. The project combines large-scale survey research, experimental studies, and expert consultation to uncover the causes, consequences, and solutions for SIL.
- Identifying who is at risk
LONELY-EU aims to build a detailed picture of the predictors of loneliness — examining how demographic, social, and psychological factors interact to determine who is most at risk. This work will lead to the creation of a decision-support tool that helps policymakers and practitioners identify vulnerable groups across Europe. (Lead: Prof Maike Luhmann, Ruhr University Bochum) - Understanding the consequences
A second research stream focuses on the outcomes of social isolation and loneliness, exploring their effects on well-being, health, and social participation. By integrating cross-country data, the project provides a comprehensive overview of how loneliness impacts individuals and communities across Europe. (Lead: Prof. Katarzyna Growiec, SWPS University) - Modeling cause and effect
To move beyond correlations, the project uses experimental and longitudinal methods to examine causal relationships — identifying what drives loneliness and how interventions can make a difference. (Lead: Prof Patrizia Catellani, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore – Milan) - Developing a European monitoring framework
LONELY-EU is also designing a monitoring framework to track SIL across the EU. Through a systematic review and expert consultations with stakeholders from EU and affiliated countries, the project establishes shared indicators and tools for ongoing assessment (Leads: Dr Hans Rocha IJzerman, Annecy Behavioral Science Lab & University of Oxford; Prof Cristiano Vezzoni, Università degli Studi di Milano Statale)
All of this work is guided by open-science principles — emphasizing transparency, data sharing, and collaboration among scientific, policy, and communication experts. The E2A Board connects this research to real-world policymaking, ensuring that evidence translates into tangible strategies for reducing loneliness and social isolation.
The Findings section will grow into a living library of EU-wide evidence on the causes, impacts, and interventions for SIL, featuring key data visualizations and links to published results.

Governance
Research Governance component ensures transparency, integrity, and ethical conduct across all LONELY-EU studies. The project adheres to EU and national research ethics standards and follows a Data Management Plan (DMP) to safeguard participant information and ensure open, responsible data sharing. This commitment to scientific integrity underpins the project’s credibility and long-term sustainability.
